10e20: Why Your Social News Linkbait Isn’t ‘Baiting’

  • Matt Siltala · 10 months ago
If people only understood the value of what you are saying here, and took even just a few moments to figure it out - it would be life changing for their website, rankings and link baited content! Great post Greg!

Thanks Matt! I love debunking things, and if you are having problems w/something - 99% of the time there is a way to fix it. Just have to find the problem and work from there!

Good advice, but come on--if you have a humor hook, have someone else write it? Give me a break, like I can't write my own funny content? If you can't write your own funnies, then you shouldn't be taking that angle at all.

great post Greg. you are so correct that if you are no going to floor the audience, then forget it.
  • Kurt Henninger · 10 months ago
Now that IS awesome advice. Great content is the first step...then connecting.

Very good advice. I think there are some many companies out there that create 100 social networking profiles becuse someone told him it would help their business. It really all starts with having a good website and good content then being very social in the networks that fit the demographic you are trying to target.

Hi Greg, this is a very helpful article that needs to be bookmarked. I'm a Digger but haven't invested much time there as I supposed to do. And hence, haven't benefited much. You're right, one doesn't have to submit only his/her own content.

After reading this, I feel very grateful that I don't have to blog for money. My blog is just my opinions about pointless junk and it doesn't matter if five people read it. Ah, the freedom of mediocrity!

Very good thoughts here Greg. So how does one overcome issue #1? Contact a top account and pitch them subtly? Other ideas?
  • GregFinn · 9 months ago
    Ephricon,

Thanks! I think I will make a follow-up post to this in the next week or so about how to tastefully contact top users. The main thing is that you don't want to come off as really salesy, building the relationship is the real key.

I've always found it easier to get my top content onto Reddit (as compared to Digg). It's far easier to get to the front page, all it takes is a few early votes to really get noticed, whereas Digg requires far more to get noticed.

I can understand link building for web designers, seo, or general software/consulting websites. It’s hard to imagine link baiting for say a candy store. Just a thought… Meanwhile I’m trying to think of one.. Also, I would think it’s a catch 22. How can you get people to take the bait without being well ranked and how can you rank high enough without it?
  • Archersem · 9 months ago
So what would you suggest fora big brand like lets say sears. What would a conversion optimized linkbait look like for them? I guess what I am asking is, if you ad any type of branding what so ever from what I have seen - you are banned or burried on digg immediately and this type of results I do not see so much from reddit, delicious, stumble and lots of other sites but digg is so anti big brand.

I've struggled with social media marketing for a long while then I took a similar approach you outlined and it made a world of difference. The content definitely has to be compelling to get the most reward. And you're right, buying votes or asking others to vote for your content will not work, it will deliver traffic but not the quality you'll want so it won't convert. Great post.

It's hard to get a story on top of the listings if you don't have the time to join the community. While I have tried many things it never worked for me.

Though all the tips are valuable to solve out almost all the social media problems but inviting votes is certainly a great and easiest idea to gain popularity.

Content is a key factor in making your website a success, if the content is updated and relevant people will be inclined to come back again and again.
