This is a great set of examples of the right and wrong way to do the Auto DM. I am still fairly new to Twitter and exploring options and would like to try using an Auto DM with a warm friendly message. However, I am unsure which ones to try... seems like finding a service that does this isn't as easy as you would think! LOL
Anyway, if anyone knows of one, please let me know @ http://twiter.com/foundbydesign. Thanks!

ummm really amazing post.. with suitable example to clear out any doubts.... i agree with you that self promotion really irks the people.. like Baron3157 did in the example looks justified.... and the frog example also evokes a curiosity and sounds legitimate... but offering direct to get promoted is sick.. and i don't think a lot of people fall under that trap :)

To "soundbyte" some of your thoughts
-create positive karma
-intrigue and curiosity are good linkbait
-do not piss people off
-aim to create a 1:1 convo even though it's a 1:many platform

PS: I'm feeling a little uneasy about sending auto DMs to people you don't know. The sincerity issue kinda bugs me a little.

I'm with Todd. I don't care for any of the auto DMs. They feel like an intrusion on what should be a private space. If you send me a link in one, you should expect to be immediately unfollowed. Sorry, but that's never appropriate.

What I'd like to see Twitter do is make it so we need to take an additonal step to allow DMs for each individual follower. Might sound like a pain in the you know what, but realistically how many people do you really want to have that private conversation with. You wouldn't have to take that extra step all that often.

I have a solution, don't follow everyone that follows you because as much as we would like to think that thousands of people are hanging on our every word, most of them are either spammers or thier ego-builder bot just happened to land on you.

I know, that's kind of a bummer to think about--what if these crappy spam DMs actually work? Either they work, which is why they keep getting sent out, or they don't work and the person is just a dumb ass who doesn't know how to market and thinks they do work.

How many of those bad DMs were from otherwise legit folks? I can't believe that people would put that stuff and expect it to be effective... or maybe it is effective even though it's crappy. Teh interwebs, sigh :(

Yeah, I got a lot of DMs that didn't even bother with a hello--they were just like "Check out this site" or "Read my book!" It's like "What the hell, at least buy me a drink first."

I LOVE you for writing this. At first, I was kind of OK with the auto-follow DM, but now it just strikes me as disingenuous. The worst ones I've seen have outright asked for me to retweet their posts (NYET! NEIN! NOT. GONNA. DO. IT.) and have gone on for THREE messages (when I get them on my cell). I would so much rather have the follow, and then, at some point, have someone @me or some such thing. The auto-follow DM is my Twitter Kryptonite.

I think it shows a lack of a desire to socialize. I guarantee that most of those who use auto-DMs are ones you will see little, if any, interaction with later on (I know of maybe 2 on the contrary). Absolutely. I think a lot of people think "Hey, I only have a small window of opportunity to make an impression!" so they end up throwing everything at you in one chunk to see what sticks. That's where that line between interesting and rude kind of disappears.

I too wonder about the effectiveness of people's thank yous- especially the ones that are so obvious. I'm curious about their results. There is a fine line between being interesting or just plain rude, huh?

Personally, I think all Auto DM's suck and if I were Twitter, I would shut down the feature. Even the ones you like add little value IMO. If you really cared more about the person, you'd check out their Twitter page where (hopefully) they've listed at least 1 relevant link that will allow the curious to find out more about the person.
