10e20: Reddit – Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About It

  • Michael M @ freshome · 2 years ago
Finally someone who write something about Reddit. Now I have a question that nobody can answer until now about Reddit.I have an account an when I submit something that link don't appear in NEW section, but if I search it in my profile I can see it.

Can someone tell me why is this happening ?
  • Chris Winfield · 2 years ago
Michael M - I have seen this happen when the submission has zero or negative points. It also seems to put a no-follow tag on submissions until they get votes...
  • Michael M @ freshome · 2 years ago
And what do you suggest in this case ? What someone with this problem can do ( and I'm sure I'm not the only one ) ? Do you have any suggestions ?
  • Chris Winfield · 2 years ago
Get friends to vote for your stories...
  • Maki · 2 years ago
Michael.. try getting one or two friends to vote for your article to see if it shows up on the New page. If it still doesn't show up, I would suggest sending Reddit an email to ask why.

In the long run, it'll be good if you could add more Reddit users as your friends and do some networking so people will naturally feel inclined to vote for your stories.

Okay, I had two stories I wanted to submit. I created an account. Submitted one story. CLicked around. Commented a few times. Tried to submit the next story.

"You're submitting too fast". Yeesh, it's been almost an hour. What's the deal with the delay? How long is it? Does the delay get shorter as karma grows? Right now it's really annoying.

i love the simplicity in Linquist
  • Michael M @ freshome · 2 years ago
I also have this problem. :)
  • Chris Winfield · 2 years ago
Dean - yeah, that is a really annoying feature. I think it's simply a matter of "spam prevention" that penalizes legit users.
  • Abdul Aziz · 2 years ago
I seriously admire the amount of time you must have spent on this excellent piece of research.
    Thank you very much.
  • Michael M @ freshome · 2 years ago
Anyway ... did someone figured out why "You're submitting too fast. try resubmitting again in a little while." or Links that don't appear in NEW section happens ?
  • gooneruk · 2 years ago
If you have a look in the preferences and help pages, you'll find your answers.

The default option under preferences is to not show articles that you have upvoted. As you automatically upvote anything you submit, you don't see it in any of the lists. But if you go to your own user profile, you'll see it there.

Therefore, if you submit a story and go straight to the "New" page, you'll probably see a number gap in the first 5 stories. That will be where your new story fits.

Untick the option box under your prefs and you should see it again.

Regarding the submitting too fast issue, this gets cleared up once you've got more than about 10 karma. You also don't see the captcha image, which speeds up the whole submitting process.

This is part of Reddit's faith in the wisdom-in-crowds process. If a user submits spammy stories, the community will keep voting him down, and he will be unable to submit stories in rapid succession.

But if a user submits relatively good stories and builds a little bit of karma, it shows he can be trusted. If the user then abuses this, his karma is reduced by people downvoting the bad stories, returning him to the submission delay stage.

Hope all this helps, and adds to the excellent article above.

There's a "feature" on Reddit that I can't seem to find documented anyplace... perhaps you can shed some light on it.

When I see a user name--in my friends list, for example--it usually has a number after it in parentheses. Seems like this would be the user's karma, except it never seems to match the karma number reported to that user in his own account. Am I missing something?
  • Eliena Andrews · 2 years ago
That was really good article on reddit. But i wonder, i submitted 2 stories on reddit and i couldn't see them on New stories also. Though i can see on my saved pages... HOw do i make it work properly ? Plz reply back on my email if you don't mind
  • Tony · 2 years ago
    Hi,
I have problem similar to Eliena Andrews. All my submissions doesn't show in New section. I have unchecked the "don't show sites after i've liked them" and it still doesn't show up.

    Any advise. Thanks.

I wanted to know when the best time to submit to Reddit was so started monitor it's activity level. It turns out that the time of submission have very little impact on the probability of making the front page.
  • Andy Bailey · 2 years ago
thats a really good explanation of Reddit, I've seen the links on posts but didn't know what it was all about, I do now. Thanks for the research and information about it!
  • DCB · 2 years ago
I submitted a story, it got 15 upvotes and 12 down, giving me a karma of 3.

The next link I submitted didn't show up in the new queue, and had zero points, even though it should have had 1 because by submitting it I upvoted it.

Now nothing I do in my account has any effect. Votes don't count, submissions are there but invisible. :-(

I have been sent to Reddit purgatory (or hell, not sure which;)...and didn't understand why. This article was a big help. I had no idea how much "science" there was behind it. Very cool. Thanks much.

I find reddit generates about 3 times as much traffic as digg. Even though it isn't as pretty as digg, it delivers quality visitors.

    Thanks for the post.
  • RohitK · 8 months ago
    hello,
I do not agree with u that reddit has more traffic than Digg. As digg's Alexa rank is better than reddit.Yes both have same page rank. And people use digg more than reddit(i Think).

@Maki nice research.and reddit reward you for quality content.

It's a good article on how Reddit works. Honestly, though, I tried with Reddit but it's just so sluggish and less user friendly than StumbleUpon that I couldn't stick with it. If I hear it gets an overhaul, I will try it again, though.

The user interface for Reddit is very much for the Uber-Geek. I guess it is supposed to replicate the command line interface so loved by programmers.

Not withstanding it's utilitarian looks, it does drive lots of traffic in some markets - especially tech related. I think Reddit also had some first-mover advantages.

From what I've seen so far after registering a few hours ago, it looks like stories appearing in the 'new' section depends on the karma of the submitter. I foolishly submitted one of my blog posts right off the bat and I can see that I got 3 hits from the reddit submittal. It was only viewable in the new section for a few moments at most.

No one voted either positively or negatively for my submittal, but I know three people followed the link. Perhaps people viewing your submittal but not voting is just as bad as a negative vote? They must use a decently complex formula for the whole karma thing.

At any rate, I suspect it will be hard to use reddit for self-promotion.
  • Mary · 1 year ago
Any can use anything for self-promotion.
    But what about real information?

PS m.b. next time declaration of war will only some advertisment (like Russian -Georgia's war?)

    PS world goes down

That was the most comprehensive article I've ever seen on Reddit.com. Very informative! I use Reddit all the time and manage to get my articles on the What's Hot section of the Gaming subcategory frequently now.

Thanks so much for the info! I'm a new reddit user & wish I had read this before starting. One question I have, which may be stupid, is how do you get a picture to come up by your link rather than the little robot guy? The page I submitted has pictures, but I didn't see a place to add one. And the little guy w/ the ? and camera looks sad!

I've been on reddit for about a month now and after working with digg, fark, stumbleupon, and all the rest (too many to name) I have found reddit to be the best by far in regard to getting people to your site. My best day so far (on a site up less a month) was 976 viewers, sent from reddit, in three hours. This is a good thing. The rest sent maybe 3 to 10 a day.

Use reddit, learn it's secrets. I've only just figured out the three sea shells.

The Problem i have with Reddit is this.

People are just F@#$ ya they are all really liberal and left as they come. Also if your promoting you own blog or website think again. these people are idiots and they wont let anything that is your's on the front page which to me is messed up. How come i cant promote my blog why finding good articles at the same time. Im adding content right? Wrong if it your dont promote it and when you ask friends most the time they wont do it because they dont want to ruin karma. I mean the whole system is just messed up.
