Jake- great post. Also, add to that list of spammy words to avoid, a term using a number, like V1agra. I get spam emails like this now because spammers are getting more creative to get past our spam filters.

In addition, do you have any ideas on how small online business owners can capture more visitors emails? Perhaps it is by promoting a product give-away contest off-site (in the social networks)? Maybe this subject is an entirely new post all its own.

Great post, some very valid points. The key, as you pointed out, is tracking the campaign. E-mail marketing should be used as a research tool as well. It's amazing the information that you can ascertain from your customers.
