10e20: Analytics on the Cheap: Six Free Stats Packages for the Startup or Small-Business Owner

  • Jenni · 2 years ago
    Hi Tamar!

Just wanted to let you know that StatCounter offers LIFETIME summary stats.

It's the detailed stats that are provided for the *LAST* 100 pageloads only, for our free accounts.

However for lower traffic sites, if you download your logs regularly, then you can keep detailed stats of all your visitors!

    Thanks!

    Jenni

    Hey Jenni,

Thanks for the clarification! Noted! :)

The Mybloglog Pro Stats package isn't bad.. but strangely, the figures it reports are *COMPLETELY* off from the other engines we have running on our blog. Personally, I like Feedburner's new stat engine.

    Cheers.

I find that I like this: Compete Snapshot

It's not quite the same product, but it's free and gives you a peak at everybody.
  • Mix 2 Parts Glue + 1 Part Loo · 2 years ago
Google analytics is best because it's totally free, no ads and it's a little more reliable.

I heard (not confirmed) that StatCounter every so often places interstitials (those pages that appear before you can visit a site). So basically all your new users will be annoyed with the interstitial and could leave your site. Really bad bad practice, can anyone confirm if this is true?

    My favorite is Blogflux!

    http://www.blogflux.com

I like the look of the service, the stats are great, and it's totally free.

Stone Steps have taken Webalizer and DRAMATICALLY improved it. It now has native support for IIS among other things.

  • Tamar Weinberg · 2 years ago
Matt, that's hot. I actually forgot to mention a limitation of Webalizer is it only displays 12 months of data. I can't tell if Stone Steps has done the same from the screenshots but it looks pretty nice.
  • Richard · 2 years ago
    Hi Tamar,

http://gostats.com is a worthy addition to your list.
  • Tamar Weinberg · 2 years ago
Thanks Richard. With all these solutions, expect a followup post on other online stats tools soon! :)

    Skeet -

You should take a look at http://attentionmeter.com. It triangulates data from Alexa, Compete and Quantcast.
  • Dean · 2 years ago
MyBlogLog is great, I like how it provides statistics that no other analytics does like what pages get the most adsense clicks. I also use Awstats. What about Mint? Anybody can recommend using Mint?
  • Allen Stern · 2 years ago
nice list -- however analog, awstats and webalizer are worthless today. good in 1996, worthless today.
  • Zigire · 2 years ago
You can get Google Analytics to track adsense clicks... do a google searh.

Please delete the aforementioned comment, the tags are wrong. I meant the following:

I use several different sets of analytics products and find http://www.reinvigorate.net to be the best. I think it’s still in beta but the service is absolutely amazing.

I’ve also heard of CrazyEgg, Mint [self-hosted by Sean Inman] and Clicky [getclicky.com].

I haven’t tested the last three but in my testing, Reinvigorate came out on top.
  • Don · 2 years ago
One other that I have used and like is WebStat. I think they are behind NextStat as well.
  • natnit · 2 years ago
This is a great list; I might start looking into some of the other packages.

I already use the first two, statcounter and google analytics, on my sites. I feel they each have their different strengths.

Statcounter offers a wealth of information that is easy to use, but it has the log limitation (although it does provide historical stats). Google Analytics, on the other hand, provides more archived information, and the graphs are prettier. :)

Another great Stat-Tool. Looks nicer than most:

  • Frank Gully · 2 years ago
StatCounter in my experience has been nothing but top notch, the information they provide goes hand in hand with analytics.

I'm addicted to the 'came from' section. Keyword optimization has never been more obvious.

In case anyone is interested, I did a similar post back in November. The tools I reviewed are a few dollars (under $30). One of them is the absolute best at really critically looking at your users that come to the site including a pretty neat google map.

I think my article and this one work very well together with almost no overlap!

I prefer reinvigorate.net to for the analysis and graphing but still jump to StatCounter for their "Recent Came From" report.

I did a write up on Reinvigorate here:

    Two more good free ones:

    Otherwise, good list.

I know it is not free, but it is cheap ...Mint is excellent as well.
  • Dr. Mohamed Taher · 2 years ago
Thanks for brigning up this topic and the tools of the trade.
I thot most don't care for this sort of free enterprise. Nevertheless, I have more and more material on Web analytics and also on the subject of Visual Search.
I did evaluate beliefnet.com and god.com using free web analytical tools.
    Best wishes.

Good roundup of freebie stats packages. Will now take a better look at google's offering! :)
  • don loeb · 2 years ago
clearly i'm biased as i work at feedburner, but you should check out our free blog site stats. of course, we also do feed stats for free and now "widget" stats of sorts...so, we can provide a view of how your content is consumed on your site and across the web. let me know if you have any questions, etc.

Thanks Tamar, great overview. I've been using visitors (http://www.hping.org/visitors/), which is incredibly fast and quite detailed.

I think you forgive clickheat in this nice list.
It's generate heatmap from click location (like crazyegg) but it is a free script :D

Clicktracks also has a free version.

I use Google Analytics, which I added myself, along with Webalizer, which came with my hosting package. I like them both, but GA gets the nod for being the most thorough!
  • Stone Steps · 2 years ago
    With regards to comment #8:
I actually forgot to mention a limitation of Webalizer is it only displays 12 months of data. I can’t tell if Stone Steps has done the same from the screenshots but it looks pretty nice.

Yes, Stone Steps Webalizer can display unlimited number of months in the summary report.
  • Gerald · 2 years ago
I've been using StatCounter for a long time. The free account is great, but limited. Unfortunately their lowest plan is $10 per month which is more that I'm willing to spend (I only pay $3/month for all of my hosting at 1and1.com). If they had a smaller plan I'd surely sign up!

The best free statistic tool is still, in my opinion, Google Analytics.

Don't forget about Clicky - best analyzer I've used.

This is great. Thanks for posting the best free online analytic packages. Analytics make it easy to determine where you should put your dollars when marketing online, also who your customer is and what they are looking for.

    Check out Pagealizer :)
Pagealizer shows how long people stay on your page with bounce rate distribution charts, how far visitors scrolled down your page (did you manage to grab their attention in the first paragraph? how much of your copy did they read?) and where people clicked (which call to action really triggered an action).

Very nice...I have been using analytics at histats.com.
Would any comment their thoughts on that analytic site?

Thanks for the great review of those packages. I've been using statcounter for about a year now, and at the present time (July 09) they keep 500 pages. They must have upped the anti. I just installed wordpress.com stats on my (self hosted) wordpress site. It seems like a nice package, and it's supposed to be pretty quick. One thing I don't like about statcounter.com is that they post an invisible link back to their page on every page of your website (where you use their product). It doesn't look to me like the wordpress plugin does that. Unless they're doing something tricky, I don't know :-)

Thank you for the great review for some of those packages we usually use Google Analytics
