Printing this post. On the wall for studying.

Is the artist that does all the great graphics on this site for hire on any small jobs? Post after post here features well laid out images and I'd love to get something similar setup for posts on my site.

One of the things that has really helped me over the years is my development of relationships with editors, reporters, journalists, and publishers. You don't have to always pitch yourself and your own company; keep feeding them useful information and develop a relationship with them. Help them out, and it will definitely pay off in the long run.

@Michael D - Patrick does all the graphics. He rocks. Contact me and I'm sure we can work something out - you know where to find me :)

@Bill - you hit the nail on the head. The majority of my press coverage has come directly from that very simple principle...

Great advice, I am launching a site for New Zealander's to buy and sell art next month.

It has a lot of great Points of Difference and should revolutionize the art sector for NZ.

Would you recommend sending the editors a pre-written article or a list of benefits with other useful information?

Also - I have learnt from my friend who is one of the best at SEO in NZ if your article is published on a news site (and linked to) these links have high authority and can help greatly in SEO. (Not to mention bring the traffic as mentioned)

I couldn't agree more about publicity being more effective than advertising. We are bombarded every day with thousands of ads making it easy to forget which one you saw where. A relatively inexpensive way to get publicity is to contact newspapers directly with a unique story pitch. Both local and national papers are hungry for stories. I found some success with local papers by sending my press release directly to managing editors. Most news websites have ways to contact their managing editors, or you can take the easy way out and use a relatively inexpensive service like NewspaperEmails.com which has already taken care of the grunt work for you. Either way, the trick is to make sure you have a unique and worthy story. Good luck.

I generate a lot of publicity by attending networking events and following up with those contacts. Writing PR articles is also very effective.
